Build a progression

Browse 44 presets by mood or style, including classical cadences, jazz turnarounds and modal loops. Each pattern explains its harmony; mood labels are suggestions. Choose a key and a progression preset. Selecting a preset loads its full pattern and changes the mode when needed, keeping locked chords. Generate restores its initial voicings. Lock any chord you want to keep when changing presets. Edited progressions show Custom when their notes no longer match a preset. You can also type comma-separated chord names, including seventh chords and inversions such as C/E. Typed progressions replace the blocks. The octave control changes the register of unlocked blocks and sets the starting octave for typed chords.

Shape the timing and voicing

Choose Chord labels to read names, Roman numerals, Nashville numbers or individual notes. Numbered labels use the reference key; Nashville uses the relative major for minor keys. The blocks run left to right in time. Drag a right edge to change its duration in whole beats, or focus the edge and use the arrow keys. Shift-click selects a range; Command/Control-click adds individual blocks, and Command/Control+A selects all. Move, invert, transpose, lock or remove selected chords together. Individual note edits and fretboard transfer use the active chord. Play auditions the progression at the chosen tempo; Solo chord plays only the selected block. Editing stops playback. Chord tones start together and sustain for the block’s duration.

Take a chord to the fretboard

Select a block to see its fretboard shape automatically. Choose an instrument and tuning, then use the Fingering arrows for different positions or the Octaves arrows for different registers. Lock the fingering to keep it with that chord when switching chords or generating a progression. Editing the notes releases its saved fingering. Download lesson saves the progression as lesson steps with exact string and fret positions, ready to import in Learn. Filled notes mark the root; each note includes its octave. Open strings have a separate column. Listen to shape auditions the displayed notes, and purple outlines identify octave changes. Allow octave changes includes shapes that shift individual voices by up to two octaves. Leave Match piano to fretboard octaves unchecked to preserve the original block, or enable it to adopt the selected shape’s sounding notes. Other blocks stay unchanged. A chord with more voices than strings needs fewer notes before it can form a complete shape.
